Honoring My Angel

The little blankets

The finished products

After I delivered our Angel son I came home and had lots of time to reflect and think about what would have made my experience "better." I walked out of the hospital with absolutely nothing. All I have are the memories of my angel in my womb and the 15 or so minutes that we spent memorizing him. I decided that no other mother should ever ever have to leave the hospital with nothing at all. This is how I decided to start this little project to donate to the Fillmore Hospital in honor of my little angel.

Instead of working on newborn blankets the past few months I have been making blankets that are a little larger than a washcloth. I have also included a great poem and a little note from me. I don't in anyway want to make the mothers experience about me so I just put my baby's initials and birthdate on the card. I feel like this is the best way I can honor him and also help other mothers to have something to take home.

The card I wrote just says:
I hope that this little blanket and poem can bring you some comfort and peace during this difficult time in your life. Love Always, The mommy of an angel. BBD 11-22-09

The Poem is a tear jerker but I love it!

What Makes A Mother
I thought of you and closed my eyes And prayed to God today, I asked, "What makes a Mother?" And I know I heard him say: A Mother has a baby,This we know is true But, God, can you be a mother When your baby's not with you?
Yes, you can, he replied With confidence in his voice,I give many women babies, When they leave it is not their choice. Some I send for a lifetime, And others for the day, And some I send to feel your womb, But there's no need to stay.
I just don't understand this God, I want my baby here.
He took a breath, and cleared his throat, And then I saw a tear. I wish I could show you, What your child is doing Here...
If you could see your child smile With other children and say, "We go to earth to learn our lessons of love and life and fear, but My mommy loved me so much I got to come straight here!" I feel so lucky to have a Mom who had so much love for me, I learned my lessons very quickly, My Mommy set me free. I miss my Mommy oh so much But I visit her each day. When she goes to sleep, On her pillow is where I lay. I stroke her hair and kiss her cheek, And whisper in her ear,"Mommy, Please don't be sad today, I'm your baby and I am here"
So you see my dear sweet one, Your children are okay. Your babies are here in My home, And this is where they'll stay. They'll wait for you with Me, Until your lessons there are through, And on the day that you come home, they'll be at the gates waiting for you
So now you see What makes a Mother, It's the feeling in your heart, It's the love you had so much of Right from the very start.

I am very excited to present these to the hospital and perhaps give myself some closure to that part of my grief. I am so glad that I was able to complete these before his due date (that was my goal.) I love you little Angel.

So glad you were able to do those. Just knowing you are doing something to honor you little one helps a lot in the closure. I hope you can find peace in your heart through this. I know that making these boxes has helped me so much. I still need to get with you and give you the little gifts I have for you.

The poem was beautiful.
What an amazing and worthwhile project to take on! After my husband's cousin lost her baby at 40 weeks, I became so much more aware of some of the amazing things people have done for those in the hospital who've lost their babies -- beautiful, handmade blankets and white crocheted dresses; people who'll come in and take professional pictures of the family with their baby; letters and small preemie sized blankets and clothes for babies born too early to survive . . . it's one of those things that if you've never been through it, you wouldn't even think of what you'd want and need, so it's an amazing blessing to other families to have Mom's like you and others who've been through similar tragedies to show that someone is thinking of them and knows what they're going through!
You're in our prayers!
